“This year will see the release of Justice League, starring Ben Affleck as Batman. Name the preceding 6 actors who have portrayed Batman on the big screen? Bonus point if you can name them in order”.

When this question rang around the hallowed Silver Cross pub, there was an acknowledgement that the questions might be a bit on the tricky side this time.

However, when the follow-up question asked who the first contestant to be eliminated from Love Island was, there was the acknowledgement that the Public Bubble had done it again; perfectly catered to every public sector graduate with no exceptions.

Following the TV/film round, a combination of general knowledge and well-published “twist” rounds came into play.

The emoji dingbats were very well received. The clue for Watford (pictured below) was particularly good. A brief moment of controversy threatened when one team pointed out that Clapham was not a tube stop. However, this was deftly sidestepped by the hosts who pointed out that they would accept the answer nonetheless.

Watford(Watt-Ford; clever you see?)

This was followed by quick-fire networking bingo as attendees flocked to the middle of the room to meet new people and fill out the bingo sheet. I myself met some people with fantastic anecdotes; a Mastermind contestant and a graduate with a pet alpaca at their parents’ home. Sadly, I couldn’t find anyone who had visited Thailand which meant that the prize went elsewhere. A few more general knowledge questions went by before a spot prize round in which no fewer than three teams correctly guessed that there were 51 cities in England. Impressive!

Finally, the public sector headlines round caused a few giggles and some pensive thinking, before the quiz drew to a close and the hosts retired to tally the scores.

The drinks continued to flow, the array of prizes were awarded and the now-institutional Public Bubble Pub Quiz was over. Until next time.
